Meet your new co-worker GPT-4o
OpenAI announced their new AI model GPT-4o this week. The AI model can receive audio, video and text inputs in real-time which makes the human/ AI interface much smoother and more realistic.
In this sample video, the AI is able to see what the user is wearing, describe the environment he is sitting in and use this data to guess what he might be doing … in this case announcing the new AI model to the world. The user is communicating with the AI via a video call.
The capabilities and their limitations are further demonstrated in a number of other videos, including one showing GPT-4o on two separate devices conversing and composing a song where it alternates lines.
There is a proof of concept video where a human delegates to GPT-4o to navigate a customer service call around getting a replacement iPhone. GPT-4o is also on the customer service side!
The videos demonstrate how advanced the technology has become in receiving and outputting a wider range of sensory modalities. We also begin to see that the way computers communicate with each other can be packaged in a way that feels human.
The increasingly familiar AI functions of data gathering, analysis and content generation can now be wrapped in a much more human interface. The concept of AI automating some of the processes humans used to do manually is now well established. Many of us have been integrating AI into our workstreams. The watershed that comes with this new technology is around what it might look like to work in tandem with an AI co-worker, or with an AI team communicating with eachother as well as with human co-workers.
Lara’s take
This technology will change our workplace relationships. Good workplace relationships are the foundation to workplace productivity. Poor workplace relationships are a significant factor in work- related mental ill health.
To date there have only been human-human relationships to consider. Very soon we will be contending with human-AI relationships and AI-AI relationships.
Just to break down one aspect of what innovative organisations will need to ask themselves:
How do you onboard an AI?
How do you onboard humans to work alongside AI co-workers?
Could AIs support human onboarding?…
